The short version
- Your trip details, plan, progress, saved phrases and settings are stored on your iPhone, and a copy syncs through your own iCloud account so a new iPhone picks up where you left off. There is no account, and we never see this data.
- When you practice out loud, speech recognition runs on your iPhone. We never upload, store or listen to your voice. If your iPhone can't recognize Japanese on the device, the speaking features are simply unavailable.
- We receive only anonymous usage events, crash reports and subscription status, through the service providers named below. None of these include audio or anything you said.
- We do not sell your information, share it for targeted advertising, or track you across other apps and websites.
- If you joined the waitlist, we keep your email only to tell you when the app launches.
1. Who we are and what this covers
Pasha Labs LLC, a Texas limited liability company ("Pasha Labs", "we", "us"), makes Hana: Japanese for Your Trip for iPhone, including its widgets (the "App"), and runs the website at gethana.app, including the waitlist (the "Website"). This policy explains what information the App and the Website handle, what we receive, and the choices you have.
The App helps you prepare for a trip to Japan with a day-by-day plan of phrases, audio, practice conversations, etiquette tips and offline cards you can show to staff. Hana and Tanu are animated characters with AI voices.
2. What stays on your iPhone
The App works without an account. What you enter and what you do in the App is saved in the App's private storage on your iPhone:
- Trip details: your landing date (or that it is not booked yet), the cities you picked, your interests, your Japanese level, and the situations you are worried about.
- Your plan and progress: your 21-day plan, which days you completed and when, which phrases you played or opened, which etiquette tips you read, your stamps and streak, and how many minutes of Talk to Hana you used this week.
- Saved phrases: the phrases you bookmark.
- Settings: romaji on or off, voice speed, appearance, daily reminder, lock-screen phrase, and similar preferences, plus small flags such as whether you have already seen a one-time offer.
- Widget data: so your widgets can show a countdown and a phrase of the day, the App keeps a small summary (destination city, dates, current day, and that day's phrase) in storage shared only with Hana's own widgets on your iPhone.
This information is not sent to us or to our service providers, except the limited, anonymous usage events described in Section 4. The phrases, audio and pictures in the App are built into it, so lessons and Trip mode work offline.
Reminders. If you turn on the daily reminder, the App schedules it on your iPhone with Apple's local notifications. We do not run a push notification server and do not receive a notification token.
Saving and sharing. If you share your progress card or save it to Photos, the App hands the image to the destination you pick (for example Messages, Instagram or Photos). The App asks only for permission to add images to your photo library, not to read it. What happens next is governed by that service's terms and privacy policy.
iCloud sync. If you are signed in to iCloud, the App keeps a copy of your trip details, plan, progress, streak and saved phrases in your own iCloud account (Apple's iCloud key-value storage), so they come back on a new iPhone or after reinstalling. This copy is stored by Apple under your Apple Account and Apple's privacy policy; we cannot see or access it. You can turn it off for Hana in Settings › [your name] › iCloud.
Backups. Like most app data, this information may be included in your iCloud Backup or computer backup, under Apple's policies, so it can move to a new iPhone.
Deleting it. Deleting the App removes everything it stored on your iPhone. You can also start over in the App under Settings > Replay onboarding, which clears your trip, plan, progress and saved phrases. Because this data never reaches us, we cannot view, recover or delete it for you.
3. Microphone and speech recognition
Two features let you practice speaking Japanese: Say it out loud in the practice conversations, and Talk to Hana. They use your iPhone's microphone and Apple's Speech framework, and only when you tap the microphone button. iOS asks for your permission the first time.
On-device only. The App tells iOS to recognize your speech on your iPhone and never to send it to a server. Your audio is processed in memory while you speak, compared with the line you are practicing, and then discarded. We never upload, store or listen to your recordings, and neither do our service providers.
If your iPhone can't recognize Japanese on the device, the speaking features are unavailable on that iPhone. The App does not fall back to server-based recognition. You can still pick your answers by tapping.
The App keeps no recording and no transcript after the practice attempt ends. It does not create a voiceprint, does not identify you by your voice, and does not use your voice to train any model. From these features we receive only the anonymous outcome of an attempt (for example "needs a fix" or "success"), the attempt number and how many seconds it took, as described in Section 4.
You can turn microphone or speech recognition access off at any time in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone or Speech Recognition.
4. Information we do collect
We collect a small amount of information to run subscriptions, fix bugs and understand how the App is used. It is tied to random identifiers generated on your device, not to your name, email address or Apple Account.
Purchases and subscriptions
Purchases are processed by Apple. We never receive your payment card or billing details. We use RevenueCat to check whether you have an active subscription or Trip Pass. RevenueCat receives an anonymous app user ID it generates, your App Store purchase receipts and transaction details (product, price, currency, dates and renewal status), your App Store country, and technical information such as device model, iOS version, App version and IP address.
App usage events (product analytics)
We use PostHog to understand, in aggregate, how people move through the App so we can improve it. The App sends a limited set of events with a random anonymous ID, for example:
- onboarding steps completed, and your onboarding answers as preset choices: how many days until your trip (or not booked), the cities, interests, level and worries you picked;
- plan revealed, paywall and one-time offer viewed or closed, which plan you started to buy, and whether the purchase completed, was cancelled or failed;
- days started and completed, streak length, phrases played or opened (and whether at slow speed), "show to staff" used, practice conversations started and finished (with the number of wrong picks and spoken answers), etiquette cards viewed, Trip mode cards opened, and widgets opened;
- for Talk to Hana, the outcome of each attempt, the attempt number and its length in seconds;
- share or save tapped, review prompt shown, and settings changed;
- standard app lifecycle events (installed, opened, updated, backgrounded) and device information that the PostHog SDK records automatically, such as device model, iOS version, App version, language and time zone.
Events never include audio, recordings, transcripts, or any text you type. PostHog also receives your IP address when events are sent, which may be used to estimate your approximate location (such as country or region). We do not use it to identify you.
Crash reports and performance data
We use Sentry to find and fix crashes. If the App crashes or hits an error, Sentry receives technical diagnostic information such as the error and stack trace, device model, iOS version, App version, memory and storage state, and the screen that was open. For a sample of sessions, Sentry also receives performance timings. We configure Sentry not to send default personal information, and crash reports do not include audio. Sentry may receive your IP address as part of the connection.
When you contact us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you include in your message.
5. Information we do not collect
- Audio, voice recordings, transcripts of what you say, or voiceprints.
- Photos, camera access, face data, or any other biometric identifiers or biometric information.
- Your trip details, plan, progress or saved phrases, beyond the preset choices included in usage events.
- Your name, email address, phone number or Apple Account (the App has no sign-up).
- Your contacts or precise location.
- Your device's advertising identifier (IDFA). The App does not track you across other companies' apps or websites and does not show ads.
6. The website and waitlist
If you join the waitlist at gethana.app, we store:
- your email address;
- your answer to "When do you land in Japan?", if you give one;
- the campaign link that brought you there, if any (such as the utm_source, ref, utm_campaign and utm_content parameters), and the referring page reported by your browser;
- the date and time you joined.
We use this only to email you when the App launches and to see, in aggregate, which links brought people to the page. We do not add you to a marketing list and we do not sell or share it. The list is stored with Supabase in the United States. The Website is hosted by Cloudflare, which processes your IP address and basic request data to deliver the pages and protect them from abuse. The Website does not use cookies or analytics scripts.
To be removed from the waitlist at any time, email support@gethana.app.
7. How we use information
- To provide the App and unlock your purchase, including restoring purchases.
- To find and fix crashes and bugs.
- To understand, in aggregate, which parts of the App work and which do not, and to improve them.
- To send the single launch email to waitlist members.
- To answer your messages.
- To prevent fraud and abuse, enforce our Terms and comply with law.
We do not sell personal information. We do not "share" personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not use it to profile you or to make decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you.
8. Service providers
We use the following companies to run the App and the Website. They process information on our behalf, under their terms and privacy policies, and not for their own advertising.
| Provider | What it does for us | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Inc. Privacy policy | App Store distribution, payments, subscriptions, refunds | Your purchase and Apple Account details, under Apple's own policy. Apple, not us, handles billing. |
| RevenueCat, Inc. Privacy policy | Subscription and Trip Pass status, receipt validation | Anonymous app user ID, purchase receipts and transactions, App Store country, device and App version, IP address |
| PostHog, Inc. Privacy policy | Product analytics (U.S. data region) | Anonymous ID, the App events described in Section 4, device information, IP address. No audio or recordings. |
| Functional Software, Inc. (Sentry) Privacy policy | Crash reporting and performance monitoring | Crash and error diagnostics, performance timings, device information, IP address |
| Supabase, Inc. Privacy policy | Waitlist database (U.S. region) | Waitlist email, trip timing answer, campaign source, referrer, sign-up time |
| Cloudflare, Inc. Privacy policy | Hosting and security for gethana.app | IP address and request data for visitors to the Website |
Speech recognition is provided by Apple's Speech framework running on your iPhone, as described in Section 3. We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect the rights, safety or property of our users, the public or Pasha Labs, or as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, in which case this policy will continue to apply to the information transferred.
9. How long we keep information
| Information | Where | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Trip details, plan, progress, saved phrases, settings | Your iPhone only | Until you replay onboarding or delete the App. We never hold a copy. |
| Microphone audio | Your iPhone's memory, during a practice attempt | Discarded when the attempt ends. Never stored or uploaded. |
| App usage events | PostHog | Up to 24 months, then deleted |
| Crash reports and performance data | Sentry | Up to 90 days |
| Purchase records | Apple, RevenueCat | As long as your purchase is active, and afterward as long as needed for accounting, tax and legal obligations |
| Waitlist entries | Supabase | Until 90 days after the App launches, or sooner if you ask us to remove you |
| Support emails | Our email | Up to 24 months after your issue is resolved |
10. Security
Keeping your trip data and your voice on your iPhone is our main safeguard: data we never receive cannot be leaked from our systems. The App's saved data uses iOS file protection. The information we do collect is sent over encrypted connections and held by the providers above, and we limit who can access it. No method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
11. Children
The App and the Website are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. You must be at least 13 to use the App, and users under 18 need a parent's or guardian's permission (see our Terms of Use). If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete what we can associate with that child.
12. Your choices and rights
Controls you have now
- Data on your iPhone: Settings > Replay onboarding in the App, or delete the App.
- Microphone and speech recognition: iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone, or Speech Recognition.
- Notifications: turn the daily reminder off in the App, or in iOS Settings > Notifications > Hana.
- Subscriptions: manage or cancel in iOS Settings > your name > Subscriptions.
- Waitlist: email us to be removed.
Requests to us
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask us to confirm whether we process your personal information, to access it, to correct it, to delete it, to receive a portable copy, and to opt out of sale, targeted advertising or profiling (we do none of those). You also have the right not to be treated differently for using these rights.
To make a request, email support@gethana.app with the subject "Privacy request". Because the App does not use accounts, the information we hold is linked only to random identifiers, and we may need your help to find it (for example, the email you used for the waitlist, or the date and approximate time of a purchase). We will verify requests in a way that fits the information involved and respond within the time the law requires, usually 45 days. You may use an authorized agent where the law allows; we may ask for proof of the agent's authority.
13. California residents
This section supplements the policy for California residents under the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CCPA).
Categories collected in the past 12 months, with sources and purposes described in Sections 4, 6 and 7:
- Identifiers: random app and device identifiers, IP address, and, for waitlist members, email address.
- Commercial information: purchase and subscription records.
- Internet or other electronic network activity: App usage events, crash and performance diagnostics, and waitlist referral data.
- Approximate geolocation: country or region estimated from IP address.
Sensitive personal information: we do not collect sensitive personal information. Speech recognition happens only on your iPhone and we never receive audio.
Disclosures: we disclose the categories above only to the service providers listed in Section 8, for the business purposes described in Section 7. We have not sold or shared (as those terms are defined in the CCPA) personal information in the past 12 months, including of consumers under 16.
Your rights: to know what we collect and how we use and disclose it, to access it, to delete it, to correct it, to opt out of sale or sharing, to limit the use of sensitive personal information, and not to be discriminated against for using these rights. See Section 12 for how to make a request. We do not offer financial incentives for personal information.
Shine the Light: we do not disclose personal information to third parties for their own direct marketing.
14. Texas and other U.S. states
If you live in Texas (Texas Data Privacy and Security Act) or another state with a consumer privacy law, such as Colorado, Connecticut, Oregon or Virginia, you have the rights described in Section 12. If we decline your request, you may appeal by replying to our decision with the subject "Privacy appeal". We will respond to your appeal within the time the law requires, and if you are not satisfied, you may contact your state attorney general. We do not process sensitive data, including biometric data, and we do not sell personal data or use it for targeted advertising or profiling.
15. Visitors outside the United States
The App is offered from the United States, and the information we collect is processed in the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those in your country. By using the App or the Website, you understand that this information will be processed in the United States.
16. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the App changes. We will post the new version here with a new effective date and, for material changes, tell you in the App before they take effect. We will not start uploading or storing your voice without first asking for your consent.
