Itterasshai: what you hear in Japan as you head out the door.

Practice the trip before you take it.

Three phrases, one situation, one tip. Five minutes a day.

  • Talk to Hana

Say it out loud. Hana tells you what to fix.

Talk to Hana. Hana, as the konbini cashier, asks: 袋はご利用ですか? Do you need a bag? You said だいじょぶです, with だいじょぶ underlined, and the note: Almost. Stretch the ō: daijōbu. Clipped short, it sounds rushed. Buttons: Hear it slowly, Try again.
  • Show it to staff

Big Japanese for staff to read. Works offline.

Show to staff screen in large Japanese type: こちらをご覧ください, カードは使えますか? (Please take a look: can I pay by card?)
  • 21 Real situations

Konbini to pharmacy, one a day.

  • A stamp for every day

Finish a day, earn its stamp.

Day 1 complete: an orange stamp with the kanji 店 and the word Konbini, dated 9.26, next to Tanu.
  • Daily practice that keeps going

Phrases come back before you forget them.

Practice screen: the Talk to Hana card with a Start talking button, and daily practice with 13 phrases to review.

Hear it before you say it.

Japanese, romaji and English, at normal or slow speed. Try one.

Say it first, anywhere

すみません
sumimasen
Excuse me.

Tap to hear it

When to use it. To get someone's attention, to squeeze past, or to say sorry for a small bump. Say it before any question.

Sounds rude if you skip it and start with your question. Staff expect すみません first.

When does Hana launch?

We're finishing the iPhone app now. Join the waitlist and we'll send one email, the day it's on the App Store.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. The weekly plan starts with 3 days free, and you can cancel in your iPhone's Settings before it renews. The Trip Pass is a single payment and never renews.

Do I need to know any Japanese?

No. Pick Zero during setup and Hana starts you with romaji and slow audio. If you can read kana, you get more Japanese on screen and less romaji.

Does it work without data in Japan?

Yes. Phrases, audio and Trip mode are built into the app, so they work in airplane mode.

Is my voice recorded?

No. Speech recognition runs on your iPhone, and your voice is never uploaded or stored. If your iPhone can't recognize Japanese on the device, you can still practice by tapping your answer. Details are in the Privacy Policy.
